Many of my patients have suffered with POTS and chronic fatigue. Many had some POTS symptoms but not a full diagnosis. Most of them were teenagers and women in their early 20’s whose symptoms started after receiving the Gardasil injection. Whether they knew the trigger for sure did not matter, as I work with symptoms and not labels.

I thought with this in mind it would be interesting to interview Karen Watkins who is a nutritional therapist from Mineral Check UK who do hair analysis to show heavy metal and mineral imbalances. 

Hair tests are widely used in the USA and Australia but less used in the UK.

I asked her to tell me her thoughts and experiences dealing with low sodium levels which is very common in many girls with POTS and chronic fatigue.

1. Low sodium/potassium levels are commonly seen in people with POTS and Chronic Fatigue, however not everyone with POTS or Chronic Fatigue has low sodium and potassium levels. That is why it’s important to do a test.


2. Low potassium and sodium levels are also an indication that the adrenals are struggling.


3. Look at how you can reduce stress on the whole system and also focus on blood sugar control.

How is the body managing energetically?

Is the body managing a nice steady glucose level?

Avoid fast releasing carbohydrates in the morning eg white bread/sugar/ pies/chocolates/white rice/white pasta/pastries which cause a fast rise and then a drop.

You need brown rice, brown bread, brown rice or corn pasta instead. These are slow releasing.


4. Sodium levels are controlled by your adrenal glands. You need to remove as many stresses as possible eg get enough sleep, enough water, good foods, remove emotional stresses. Then the adrenal glands can help the sodium levels.

Simple things can have a big effect.


5. Exams and school life is a continual stress. As this is harder to avoid, diet and other factors becomes more important to focus on as it’s easier to change these.


6. Light is very important. Going to bed at the same time each night is very important and darken the room. Avoid screen-time an hour before bed.

Don’t feel tempted if you can’t sleep to play on your phone. It tires out the adrenals even more.


7. Get a test from a licensed lab. This will help you to look at improving vitamin and mineral levels.


8. Salt tablets are not always the obvious solution. Adding salt to food is just as good. Focus on potassium levels especially if salt tablets are not working for you.

If you have lots of sodium you have low potassium and vice versa. Easy Potassium fixes are V8 juice, vegetable juices, grapefruit, and liquorice tea. Simple and inexpensive.


9. Naturopaths in the 1930’s used grapefruits to combat adrenal fatigue before steroids were invented. Fresh nettle tea works well too.


10. Changing your diet will help you recover faster. Real food rules. If you cannot eat your greens , hide them in your cooking. If it’s really challenging then go for supplements.
